About This Association

The first meeting of the American Society for Photobiology (ASP) occured in 1973, led by then-president Dr. Kendric C. Smith. Now in its fourth decade, the ASP continues to pursue the same goal as its charter: to promote and disseminate research in the field of photobiology. We broadly define photobiology as all biological phenomenon that include non-ionizing radiation, and strive to facilitate the integration of different disciplines into this field. One of the largest culminations of our mission is our Biennial Meeting. This meeting includes presentations on the many fields of photobiology, as well as several associate member-focused events designed to foster the next generation of photobiological research. In the past, this has included discussions on grant writing from NIH-funded researchers, luncheons designed to foster mentorship, and symposia on non-academic career options.
